“The Drunk Bee” a piece by Kostas Lales

This piece symbolise a bee that it finally found itself sitting on the ground and trying to find the way to go back to the nest. She got too much nectar and she cannot fly. After a long week, she is really tired of going from one flower to the other and the thoughts that she has are how to handle this situation. The autumn is coming and she doesn’t have the strength to move her body because of the wind. Her body now just stuck like a sculpture that it stays motionless and cold.

The sculpture symbolizes the life of man, how he is born into this world and how he leaves it when he dies. The body is upside down, as a symbolic ticket to the underworld, the embodiment of the body with the earth. An upside-down puppet, showing us the destination of each one of us. Earth is a feminine planet of entity and creation. To give birth to a daughter means that you give birth to a mother.

Escapism in Athens – Broken Breaths 2023 https://www.laleskostas.com/?p=1224 https://www.laleskostas.com/?p=1224#respond Sun, 09 Apr 2023 19:27:28 +0000 https://www.laleskostas.com/?p=1224 An artwork by Kostas Lales.

Our breaths start from the rhythm of the heart. We feel them without seeing them. Throughout our lives, there are people with whom we share what our bodies produce. Air, water, temperature, and contact. The work “Broken Breaths”, expresses the opening of inhalation and exhalation as they are trapped within shape and volume, while at the same time, they are based on our thoughts and our stories.

Forest’s DNA” by Kostas Lales

Κostas Lales: “Athens is a city which every now and then has endured many changes. The image of Athens today is that which is seen through the eyes of today’s citizen. The union, interaction, correlation and the abstract image are the 4 main elements that unite the attitude of all residents to the environment. ‘Forest’s DNA’, the work with which I participate in the exhibition ‘Leptogeos’ refers to the generations and to the nature of Greece. A Greece that for centuries has been reshaping people and living in the creation of today, without forgetting that this place is also part of our planet. The ceramic sculptures are united with the trunk of truth. A trunk that holds on it, the form and matter of people.”

“Outro : World-Building Within and Outside the Studio” at SVA Galleries https://www.laleskostas.com/?p=1195 https://www.laleskostas.com/?p=1195#respond Sat, 26 Nov 2022 18:17:43 +0000 https://www.laleskostas.com/?p=1195 July 21 – August 15, 2022

School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Outro: World-Building Within and Outside the Studio,” an exhibition of thesis projects by MFA Fine Arts students, curated by Herb Tam. The exhibition will be on view from Thursday, July 21, through Monday, August 15, at the SVA Chelsea Gallery, 601 West 26th Street, 15th Floor, New York City.

“Outro: World Building Within and Outside the Studio,” an exhibition of new work by recent graduates of SVA’s MFA Fine Arts program, explores new possibilities for storytelling, representational politics, rendering the subconscious, discourses with abstraction and the grid, recoding pop cultural signifiers, and excavating spiritual and kinship customs. The works on view, selected by guest curator Herb Tam in collaboration with the artists, are the culmination of studio practices that engaged internal reckonings over process, form and intention. They are a final statement—an outro—to an intense two-year program.

In my latest work “Dreaming Abyss”, I am using sculptures, sand, plants, two dimensional forms and symbols to create an installation. I use symbolism to construct a unique visual language. The forms organize the space and create the abstract flow of the liquid element. The installation consists of five statues. The floor of the space is filled up with sea sand. The sculptures seem to be flooding on the surface of square pools filled up with blue water. Plants are spread around the installation and create the atmospheric image of a microclimate, giving the visitor the feeling that the vegetation does not follow the linear time and exists in infinity.

The dream was like “ I was swimming in the sea, and I felt my legs heavy. I put my head in the water and I saw big sinkers that were part of my body and I started to go down. As soon as I reached the bottom I realized that I didn’t need oxygen and so I decided to start walking. I was walking for 5 minutes and suddenly I arrived in front of a bright door. What I saw in that white room was incredible. A treasure of ancient objects.

“BLANC DAYS” – ArtZONE GALLERY 42. 2022 https://www.laleskostas.com/?p=1160 https://www.laleskostas.com/?p=1160#respond Mon, 25 Jul 2022 17:19:01 +0000 http://www.laleskostas.com/?p=1160 An Artwork by Kostas Lales, 2022

Sounds of the last century can be heard through a stone. My eyes are nailed on your head and they try to understand what they see. Various passers-by feel that they are also part of my work. Their heads have become a point of reference and they are making strange sounds. What is it that feeds on sounds and gets used to the different pulses of each generation? I listen, I accept, I convey. I leave behind me the corners and sides of a white box.

I look again and more carefully. What I see in the black shadow are small flashes, which are guided by the energy produced by our body. I may not hear what you say but I can read your lips. You are a very rare sound wave.

The OracleThe Goldfish , Two artworks by Kostas Lales , 2022

1) The Oracle, 2022, Plaster with Sand, 14in x 11in x 2in (2 Dimensional Artwork )

Human heads and spots appear through the sand. This work has to do with the imagination of memory. As you observe the ground you see that it has some negative imprints that have been created by humans.

You observe them more carefully and realize that they are dents of value that tell a story. History gives birth to education and education gives birth to faith. When I touch the faith with any kind of art, I feel that my thoughts are imprinted on the earth. So from the work, it gives us the illusion that it is part of our planet.

2) The Goldfish, 2021, Plaster with Acrylic paint, 19.5in x 27.5in x 1in (2 Dimensional Artwork )

The understanding of geometry starts from the senses and the examination of human evolution. When body, geometry and symbols become one the foundation of image and matter is autonomous and sacred. I create sculptural archetypes that present unique characteristics and have their own personalities. I am fascinated by the way time and environmental factors alter our skin and body shape and I am reflecting this transformation in my work.

The power of night is in our hands. Every time that I decide to go out I have the impression that whatever happens during the night will remain hidden and it will stay forever at our limbs. The project I want to participate in has to do clearly with the narrative and the perspective of stabilization. As we are out at night, experiencing the loss of the sun on the one hand and at the same time the true nature of our planet, we come in direct contact with the power of our wants. Decisions, experiences, situations, discussions, conclusions, and stories play the role of the anxious but also a creative perception that we have as human beings. The nighttime is always a little more real than the daytime. The two hands joined by our wrist show the communication of people and the continuation of our experiences.

Title: The Meadow of sounds.

This work symbolizes the birth of balance which for me starts from the ears. Sound, water, distance, and time are the elements that touch our audio world. Using the medical serum I show that a drop has sound because it has volume. As I say, each element has a volume and each volume has its own sound.
When you close your eyes and hear the sounds of nature, the only thing that happens at that moment is to see the dreams that you saw as a child.
